The Gorelal Mehta College is the only higher educational institute in the city of Banmankhi, a subdivisional town of Purnia district in Bihar province. In view of the difficulties of the poor and downtrodden people of the area the great freedom fighter Anuplal Mehta had opened this college on July 17, 1955 in the name of his beloved father Gorelal Mehta. The first Principal Mr. J C Bose was appointed on September 02 the same year. Later the college was taken over by Darbhanga based Lalit Narayan Mishra University in 1977. Later it became the part of Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, Madhepura. Now it is associated with Purnea University. Now this college is the last college at the western end of Purnea University jurisdiction.
This Gorelal Mehta College was opened in that city which is associated with mythological Lord Narsingh who destroyed the demon Hiranyashipu, the spiritual leader Saint Paramhans Menhidas who taught the people how to lead a peaceful life and a visionary statesman like Bhola Paswan Shastri who laid the foundation of clean politics in India.
The Gorelal Mehta College, which is popularly known as G L M College, now provides the education of bachelors level in arts and science streams. With Hindi and English languages in humanities we offer History, Political Science, Philosophy in social science and Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics in pure science streams. Besides, we expect the commerce, Sociology, Geography, Music and Home Science like subjects to begin in the coming days. With two dozen teachers and one dozen non-teaching staff the college is serving the students in sports and other cultural activities also. The college is already spread in 30 acres of land comprising the college buildings, two play grounds and some agricultural lands. Besides we have the campus completely equipped with smart classes, WI-FI, CCTV, electrified with two solar panels, the beautiful and fragrant gardens. Two gatekeepers are on duty round the clock.
